Classroom Activities
Creative Writing
Students are busy brainstorming as they create their very own stories. They get a chance to be authors and illustrators and show their creativity. Some of the stories are fiction and some are non-fiction. I can't wait to read them. The students are coming up with some very good stories. They will be sharing their stories on an up and coming PODCAST.
Reading Is Power
Students are busy reading and preparing for a classroom discussion about the story they are reading. Our discussions start off with identifying the main idea which is what the entire story is about. We also identify the characters and the setting of the story. We then determine if there is a problem in the story and how the problem was solved. Students also identify cause and effect from the story. By engaging in these types of discussions, students get a better uderstanding of what they are reading.
Students become Consumers
Students are learning how to be consumers by purchasing things that they want or need. They are also learning how to count money. Students have to use critical thinking and problem solving skills to come up with the correct amount of money for the objects that they want to purchase. As a reward for their brilliant skills. They get to keep the things that they purchase.
Regrouping Relay
Students are having a ball as they regroup two digit addition problems in a regrouping relay race. Everyone at the table has to work the problem on paper and only one person at each table can count the cubes and regroup them per math problem. Students were allowed to assist each other by coaching their classmates through the problem. Each table receives a point once they have finished working the problem as well as regrouping the cubes. Students get the opportunity to learn how to add and regroup two digit numbers, collaborate together and have fun doing it. They had so much fun that they are now wanting to work three digit addition problems. Three digit regrouping will be next on our agenda.
Taking Observations
The students planted bean plants and have been taking observations in their Science journals on how the plants are growing. Students got a chance to learn about the different parts of the plant.
